As we get older, we appreciate the time we spend at home. After all, it’s a space that you’ve made all your own. However, for our ageing loved ones, it’s still important to spend time out of the home. This is because it is beneficial to your health. Being active will help stave off poor health and allow you to spend time with loved ones. Here are some ways you can get them out of the house and have a good time.
1. Go For a Coffee
A coffee is one of life’s simple pleasures, and one that you can make a daily routine out of. Sure, you can make a cup at home, but it’s never quite the same as going to your favourite local café to get some. Many people like to make this part of their daily routine, and if the café is close enough, go for a walk to get their coffee.
You can also gather some friends to get a coffee if you want an afternoon out. It’s important for your loved one to spend time with others, and a change of scenery can make it easier to talk. It’s also very beneficial for their health.
2. Check Out Local Community Centres
Some may worry about going out, as limited mobility and other needs may make it more difficult. However, they can still enjoy time out of the house by visiting local community centres. Many community centres have activities set up especially for elderly people, suited to a range of needs. Take a look at local churches, libraries, and elderly hospices, too, as they may have events lined up for the public to get involved in.
For example, they may be hosting tai-chi classes, coffee afternoons, book clubs, and more. The beauty of this is that there are plenty of activities for your loved ones, no what they’re interested in. Many activities occur weekly, too, so there’s always something to look forward to.
3. Enjoy the Garden
If it’s too difficult for your loved one to go far from home, or it’s too much of a bother, then they can still enjoy the benefits of the outdoors from their garden. Just getting some fresh air every day will do a lot of good for their mental and physical health.
You can simply sit outside, enjoy the garden, and have a catch-up. Why not enjoy some coffee, too? A good idea is to buy a bird feeder, as you can sit outside and watch the birds come and go. Though not ideal when the weather is cold or wet, during warmer weather this is a great way to get your loved ones out of the house.
4. Do Errands with Your Loved Ones
As your loved ones get older, it may be that you have to start doing some errands for them. Whilst this can be helpful for your loved one, it may mean they spend more time sitting down. That means less time out of the house.
As such, why not convince your loved ones to accompany you on an errand? This will help them to spend time out of the house, and is an opportunity to be with friends and family. They may also be able to do some chores themselves with your support.
5. Go For a Walk
Sometimes, the simplest way to get out of the house is to go for a short walk. This helps your loved one get the exercise they need. It also has other benefits, such as being a great way to clear the mind. If your loved one lives near a park, or their local streets are easily walkable, it’s a great way to spend time outside. Accompany them on a ten minute walk outdoors – that’s more than enough for them to feel the cardiovascular benefits.
These are just a few of the ways you and your loved ones can start getting out of the house. You will all experience the health benefits of doing so. Furthermore, there are plenty of activities to help you enjoy the outdoors and spend time with others, so consider introducing these to your loved one’s routine.
