This week is a particularly special and important time with numerous awareness days, all revolved around health, which we would like to bring to your attention.
Men’s Health Awareness Week
This year’s national Men’s Health Awareness Week is focusing on belly fat.
“Belly fat is a problem because it lurks not just beneath the surface but also gets down deep and surrounds your vital organs. Regardless of your overall weight, a large amount of belly fat increases your risk of:
- Cardiovascular disease
- Insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes
- Colorectal cancer
- Sleep apnea
- Premature death from any cause
- High blood pressure

So what can be done to tackle the problem of belly fat? Exercise, cutting out drink and eating well are the main key important factors. Not regularly exercising and eating highly saturated fatty foods and convenient foods contribute to the storage of fat, particularly which gathers around the waist in men as they grow older.
This awareness week aims to highlight the hazards of belly fat in men and make people aware of when you should worry about your weight. The Men’s Health Forum provides lots of information on this area and also give key weight measurements which suggest whether you’re at risk of any of the above medical issues.
Rheumatoid Arthritis Awareness Week
The next awareness event running is Rheumatoid Arthritis week.
“As the name suggests, its aim is to raise awareness and challenge misconceptions and attitudes people may have around RA. By dedicating a week to raising awareness we aim to broaden perceptions, knowledge and understanding of this disease” – NRAS

Cervical Screening Awareness Week
Another important health awareness event taking place all week is Cervical Screening Awareness. Did you know two woman lose their lives to this type of Cancer every day? And One in four woman choose not to go to cervical screenings which prevents 75% of cervical cancers developing further.
By running this event every year woman across the nation get informed on the facts and often realise the importance of attending screenings. But how can you make a difference and get involved?
- Order free information materials to raise awareness about screening in your workplace, school, GP surgery or community centre
- Share messages on social media, using the text: ‘Attending your cervical screening (smear test) can reduce your risk of cervical cancer. Find out how at www.jostrust.org.uk #CSAW’
- Download and share CSAW graphic
- Ask your employer to sign up to Time to Test, the latest campaign to encourage employers to allow women the time to attend if they cannot get an appointment out of working hours
- Host an event to raise money to help Jo’s Cervical Cancer trust to continue their work
- Take part in annual Steps for Jo’s event taking place during the week of CSAW
