It has been seventy years since Queen Elizabeth II was crowned, making her the longest-reigning British monarch in history. This also means there has never been a Platinum Jubilee in the UK before; truly, this is a once-in-a-lifetime spectacle. With many of us off work for the long weekend, it’s the perfect opportunity to engage in some activities with your elderly loved ones.
But what are you going to do? Here are some ideas for activities you can take part in for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.
Street Party
It has become something of a tradition for communities to party in the streets when a jubilee comes around. Maybe the trestle tables will come out and everyone will enjoy party food on the street; perhaps the local park will become a picnic spot for everyone living nearby. There may even be a proper village fete with games and stalls aplenty.
Find out what events have been arranged by your local authority. Or ask around the neighbours to see if they’re doing anything. The Platinum Jubilee is the perfect opportunity to spend time with the people your loved one smiles at every time they walk to the shops.
Family Barbecue
If the hustle and bustle of a street part is too much for your loved one to handle, consider a more intimate garden gathering instead. Invite friends and family around for a day in the garden – provided the weather cooperates, at least. Stock up on burgers, sausages, and charcoal, looking forward to the familiar smoky aroma of a backyard barbecue.
Hang some bunting around the garden to mark the occasion. Plan some games for the younger members of the family. Your loved one is sure to appreciate the time with their grandkids without potentially awkward interactions with neighbours. And of course, don’t forget to put on some music to make it a true family party.
Pimm’s O’Clock
Nobody says you have to do something big for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. Why not simply visit your loved one and share a Pimm’s? This drink has become a quintessentially British beverage for summer celebrations. And if you are having a bigger event, it’s a simple task to make a jug of Pimm’s for all the adults.
Enjoy your drinks with a punnet of strawberries and cream; lounge in the garden and have a catch-up, enjoying the sun. If it’s a rainier day, you can still indulge in a drink or two. Raise a glass in recognition of the Queen’s seventy years of service, and then enjoy the rest of your day with your loved one.
Trooping the Colour
This momentous events marks the Queen’s birthday and will be televised on BBC One and iPlayer from 10am on Thursday 2nd of June. More than 1,400 soldiers, 200 horses, and 40 musicians will travel from Buckingham Palace to Horse Guard’s Parade, joined by members of the Royal Family.
The close of the event will be marked by the traditional RAF fly-past, which will be observed by the Queen and her family from the Buckingham Palace balcony. This year’s Trooping the Colour is the first since 2019, having been cancelled twice on account of the pandemic. If you can’t get to London to watch it in person, the TV is the next best thing.
Eastender’s Jubilee Special
For Eastenders fans, Thursday 2nd of June will be marked by a very special episode of the long-running soap. Filmed in March, in this episode residents of Albert Square are doing everything they can to mark the Jubilee in spectacular fashion.
To make this episode even more special, it will also feature a guest appearance from the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall, starring as themselves to mark the event.
Royal Bake-Off
If your loved one is a fan of cakes – or if the grandkids are coming round – the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee could be a great time for doing some baking. Make some old favourites, from simple butter biscuits to a more lavish triple chocolate layer cake. Try some recipes that the grandkids can get involved with, such as brownies and cheese straws.
Of course, to truly mark the occasion, you could try your hand at the winner of this year’s Jubilee Pudding competition. It went up against thousands of other recipes to be named the official dessert of the Platinum Jubilee. Go for a Jubilee Walk
You don’t need to have a party or get stuck in front of the TV to mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. In fact, for some people all the celebrations might feel like too much to handle. Why not put some space between them and the excitement?
Head down to a local woodland walk or nature trail. You could even take some other family members along. Time outdoors can have a positive impact on mental health; if your loved one has trouble moving around, be sure to take mobility aids along.
