In this 'How To' article, Careline365 takes a look at the Yale Y500 key safe and what you need to do to set the security device up at your home and how to use it afterwards.
Key safes are a great way of keeping your house secure by keeping your spare keys locked away behind a pass code which only you and your chosen friends or family members know.
Features of the Yale Y500
The Y500 is made by Yale - a company known for their security devices such as padlocks, CCTV, gate locks, and window locks. This means that you can be sure the Y500 has been created by a company that knows what they are doing.
The key safe features:
-
- A strong die-cast body
- A weather resistant case
- A re-settable four digit rolling combination lock
- Concealed fittings
- Easy installation - with the necessary fittings included in the box.
- Room for up to three Yale designed keys
Setting the Combination
To set a combination code on your Yale Y500 key safe you firstly need to open the compartment door and push the reset lever to the left and downwards.
Whilst keeping the lever in this position, begin turning the combination dials to the numbers you wish to use. Once you have decided on your combination, make a note of it and push the reset lever back up into its original position.
Next, close the compartment door, hold it shut, and then scramble all of the numbered dials - this will lock your device. To check that your code is working correctly you can do a test-run by entering your code - the key safe should now unlock if you have entered your details in correctly.
Our Careline tip would be to make sure that your combination is as unique and difficult to guess as possible. Make sure that it isn't a simple code which people could work out and that you ONLY inform selected members of your family and your chosen friends of the code. If you are covered by the Careline365 alarm service, you can also inform our Care Team of your code. This will allow us to pass it on to the emergency services if we ask them to attend your property. This can safe precious minutes, getting help to you sooner.
Finally, although this might seem clear, we would advise you not to keep a copy of your code anywhere near the key safe. If you need to keep a note of your combination then keep it somewhere safe where only you can access it.
Fixing the Key Safe to Your Wall
The fittings required to place your new key safe on to your house come with the product, but there are just a few other things you will need to fix it to your wall. You will need the following: a Phillips head screwdriver, a level, a drill and the relevant drill bit.
To begin, you need to open the compartment door which will reveal four screw holes. Place your key safe on to your wall, in the desired location, and use your level to ensure that the lock is vertical. You then need to mark the position of the four screws with a pencil or marker.
Using the relevant drill bit use your drill to drill the holes in the correct positions. Position your key safe onto the wall and insert the four screws provided using your Phillips head screwdriver. Ensure that they are as tight as possible so that your key safe is secure on the wall.
Once the device is secure on your wall you can then close the compartment door and scramble the combination dials to ensure that the safe is locked. Remember that your key safe will not lock if you do not scramble the dials so be careful not to leave the door open by mistake.
To help protect the dials from the weather or any other people remember to also close the black dial cover when you head back into your house.
