Did you know today is National Toast Day? Well you do now, so put down that salad and get the toaster at the ready!
This national day has been celebrated since 2014, not the oldest of celebrations, nor does it grant you a day off, buy hey we can still enjoy it. Whether it’s white bread, brown bread, thick cut, or thin cut, there’s hundreds of ways to enjoy a tasty slice or two, and it’s not just for breakfast either!
Best ways to eat toast
Personally, medium cut granary bread, toasted golden brown, but that’s just me. You can enjoy your toast in a variety of ways however, from lightly toasted to practically burnt, whatever floats your boat.
Some popular toast ‘recipes’ include good old traditional jam or marmalade spread on top. Lemon curd is a particular favourite. Honey and bananas is great topping for breakfast and can be quite filling to get you started for the day ahead. In addition to these traditional spreads there’s also Nutella, a lovely hazelnut chocolate spread.
If you’re thinking you’ve missed out on toast day because you had Muesli this morning, don’t fret because there’s always lunch and dinner toast options. Scrambled egg on toast, poached egg on toast, classic cheese on toast (don’t forget the Worcester sauce), and also beans or spaghetti on toast.
Some of these might be a regular meal for the likes of students but we can enjoy them too, particularly on National Toast Day. If you’re looking for something a little more nutritional and filling diner options could include, and aren’t limited to one type of bread:
- Avocado on toast
- Mediterranean vegetables on toast
- Goats cheese and red onion (great on ciabatta)
- Salmon and creme cheese
- Chickpea and tomato salad
- Beet and pesto
- Moroccan Carrot Bruschetta
- Tomato Bruschetta With Sautéed Spinach
- Roasted Pumpkin Hazelnut Crostini
Sweet options if you have a bit of a sweet tooth can also include:
- Berry Bruschetta With Walnut Mint Pesto
- Pears on toast
- Cinnamon Apple Toasts With Bourbon Syrup
- Blueberry and Almond toast
- Strawberry Basil Chocolate Mascarpone Crostini
- Banana and Nutella Dessert Bruschetta
