Boris Johnson is the new Prime Minister

We have been waiting in anticipation. The announcement has just been made today that Boris Johnson has been named the new UK Prime Minister.

The newly elected Prime Minister was announced around 12:05 today. This comes after a ballot of about 160,000 Tory members who were able to cast their vote up.

There were originally 13 conservatives who stood to become Theresa May’s successor. However this soon dwindled to two main competitors- Boris Johnson and Jeremy Hunt. One candidate, Education Minister Anne Milton tweeted her resignation just a mere half an hour prior to the leadership result was due to be revealed. In a statement she had written on Twitter, she said “”I believe strongly that Parliament should continue to play a central role in approving a deal and that we must leave the EU in a responsible manner”.

It has been reported in the run-up to today’s events that Mr Johnson was a clear favorite. But this doesn’t come without its issues- several senior members of Parliament have said they would not serve under him.

Both candidates have had clear views about how they wish to implement an exit from the EU; Mr Johnson firmly states he was determined to action this on the 31st of October, whether a deal was in place or not, whereas Mr Hunt feels he is better placed to secure a negotiated exit and agree more time to finalize this.

The winning politician is due to make a victory speech at Westminster this afternoon. Theresa May will then hold her final ‘Prime Ministers Questions’ before travelling to Buckingham Palace to officially offer her resignation to the Queen. An announcement of the new cabinet is set to be announced later in the day also.
