When is the best time to get a personal alarm?

Advice from Maureen Cable, registered nurse.

What if?

The subtle nagging worry that sits in the back of your mind, the ‘what if’ I were to fall right now, ‘what if’ I couldn’t get out of this bath, ‘what if’ I have another of those funny turns. All of that disappears the moment you get a Careline365 personal alarm. And as soon as you hear the responder’s voice for the first time you will relax...and smile. At the same time your daughter, son or concerned friend may burst into tears at the relief and peace of mind that your personal alarm gives them.

No-one wants to admit to weakness, and pride makes many people hesitate before getting an alarm as if it is an admission of frailty; but actually it is simply a matter of managing risk – we have fire alarms without expecting a fire, house insurance without expecting building collapse, so why not a personal alarm ‘just in case’?

It's not just for emergencies.

Initially it might feel odd to wear an alarm button, but in reality, they are well designed and don’t ‘go off by accident’ which is a worry I have heard from some new alarm wearers. With the advent of wearable tech, from Fitbits to Smart Watches, there is an increasing acceptance of digital monitoring and reduction of any perceived stigma attached to wearing an alarm. Most people are surprised at how lightweight the alarm button is and quickly agree that they would soon forget that they had it on. Everyone can agree that in actual fact it makes sense to have a means of summoning help if required. I have likened it to having a concerned friend living with you – but they don’t annoy you -  or eat your food!

We tend to think that the alarm is for full-on emergencies only, but they can and should be used for situations where something concerning is going on and help is required short of emergency care, when the alarm operator can maybe alert a family member to pop round. Situations such as loss of balance, feeling generally unwell, a change to an existing medical condition – to be dealt with, but not requiring 999 emergency assistance.

The beauty of the Careline365 personal alarm service is its simplicity. Once the alarm is being worn and in the event of need there is no trying to find a phone, no wondering who to call, just a simple press of the button and a call is automatically dialled to the response centre who can see on screen who is calling making the contact specific for the individual. The responder will listen intently, using a trained ear to assess content and context of the call and, whilst mobilising help, offer reassurance that the appropriate help is on the way.

Another benefit of the alarm is the reassurance it gives to families, whether separated by distance or work commitments family members will be concerned for older relations and that worry can really impact loved a one’s wellbeing. Having an alarm really does give peace of mind for the wearer and the family. I have known many a daughter or son in tears as the burden of responsibility is lifted when a much-loved parent accepts the Careline365 personal alarm service.

Quality of life is also improved by having a Careline365 alarm! It sounds odd, but you are not going to be fearful of attempting something new or reluctant to do something tricky if you know that you have a safety net in place in the form of the Careline alarm if things were to go badly. An alarm wearer I recall was allowed back out in his garage by his wife (who had forbidden him from leaving the house without her after a medical episode) once he had his alarm. So, although we started this piece with an acknowledgement of a reluctance to wear an alarm, we conclude that wearing a Careline365 personal alarm gives a certain freedom, it empowers, and plays an important part in independent living.
