Advice from our nurse ambassador, Maureen Cable

Maureen's career in healthcare spans five decades, from nursing and midwifery to intensive care and A&E. It was there that she formed a belief she has carried ever since: early access to emergency care saves lives.

That belief led her from clinical practice to founding a nursing agency, and eventually to personal alarms for older and vulnerable people at home.

When is the best time to get a personal alarm?

By Maureen Cable

The subtle nagging worry that sits in the back of your mind, the ‘what if’ I were to fall right now, ‘what if’ I couldn’t get out of this bath, ‘what if’ I have another of those funny turns.

All of that disappears like scotch mist the moment you get a Careline365 personal alarm. And as soon as you hear the responder’s voice for the first time you will relax...and smile. At the same time your daughter, son or concerned friend may burst into tears at the relief and peace of mind that your personal alarm gives them.

No-one wants to admit to weakness, and pride makes many people hesitate before getting an alarm as if it is an admission of frailty; but actually it is simply a matter of managing risk – we have fire alarms without expecting a fire, house insurance without expecting building collapse, so why not a personal alarm ‘just in case’?

After a full-time clinical career, I ran nursing and care services and latterly had my own personal alarm company.

Throughout all that time the one consistent winning factor for best outcomes has been the immediate access to skilled treatment and care.

All to often the previously independent individual would have suffered a fall, and both the lead up to the fall and the time taken to get help afterwards would be significant factors in the rate of recovery and the level of independence regained thereafter.

When I started providing alarms, I knew that the degree of regained independence would be positively impacted, but better than that – the
avoidance of the loss of independence that the early identification and
treatment of potential threats deliver.
