Next Tuesday November 26th is the deadline for registering to vote in the UK general election on 12 December 2019. Make sure you’re registered and ready to vote on election day with the following details.
How To Register
Online
You can register to vote online. It is the quickest and easiest way, and usually takes about 5 minutes to complete online.
Paper form
Alternatively, you can contact your local Electoral Registration Office and ask them to post a paper form to you. You’ll then need to return the completed form to your local Electoral Registration Office. The paper forms are also available online to print.
Already Registered To Vote?
If you have received a poll card at your address, then you are currently registered and can vote in the upcoming election stated on the poll card.
If you’ve had a change in address, name or nationality since you last registered to vote you will need to register again.
Check your details online on the government’s GOV.UK website. Contact your local Electoral Registration Office to check your registered details.
Encourage Your Friends And Family To Register
Check your family and friends are ready to vote as well. This is especially true for the younger members of your family who may not have registered before.
Voting Demographics
The last general election in 2017 saw only 57% of young people aged 18 and 19 voting. This compared to 84% of people aged 70+ who voted.
Young people can vote in the upcoming election on 12 December 2019, provided they’re aged 18 or over (or 16 or over in Scotland). They can register if they’re both:
- aged 16 or over (or 14 or over in Scotland)
- a UK citizen (or an Irish, EU or Commonwealth citizen with a permanent UK address)
UK Political Climate
The UK has been experiencing an incredibly tumultuous time in politics lately with Brexit and Boris Johnson coming in as the new Prime Minister earlier in July. It is a significant election for the whole of the UK and Europe, making it even more important to make sure you and your family are registered.
