Elderly neighbours: are you checking on them?

It's easy to forget about the importance of checking in on someone when we are busy with work, school and college but it's incredibly important to do so particularly at certain times of the year such as Winter, Christmas, special occasions and when the weather is bad.

For elderly people living in residential homes, there are carers to look out for the residents, but many who live at home may not have anyone that check's up on them. This is why it's important to keep an eye out for anyone elderly, such as friends, family or elderly neighbours, who you know don't have any regular visitors.

Loneliness in the elderly

Loneliness is a real problem for the elderly. The advertisement below by Edeka (a German grocery store), particularity portrays this area well, with an old man eating alone at Christmas who decides to bring his family together.

The family all live busy lives with jobs and kids, so he pretends to pass away so that they return for his funeral, only to surprise them standing at the dinner table set up for Christmas lunch. Watch the advert below.

If it's been a few days or more since you've popped around to see how an elderly loved one, friend or elderly neighbours are, try and make the time to do it today. You may well be the only person they speak to today, and that will really brighten their day. It's also important to check how they are in case of a fall or other health problem that may have gone unnoticed if they have been alone for a number of days.

You could make a routine of dropping by for a cuppa or taking some treats around a couple of times a week. Sharing your time like this is a wonderful way of spreading cheer and a great gift to give all year round. It not only makes that person feel loved and cared for, but it'll also make you feel good seeing the smile you put on that elderly persons face.

We all run busy lives, but it's important to really appreciate the moments you spend with people, be it your family, friends or neighbours.

Elderly Neighbours - Make A Careline Referral

If you do know of someone that lives alone, such as a friend, family member or any elderly neighbours, it might be worth referring them to Careline for a Careline Alarm. Our alarms are 24 hour hour emergency alarms that come with a pendant to activate help if ever required for the likes of a fall or trip. You can find out more about our products and services by directing to our guide. Our referral form can be accessed here if you think you might know someone who would benefit from a Careline.
