How to choose the best Personal Alarm

Finding the right personal alarm for your loved one can be a long and complex process. There are many different providers and services available and it can sometimes be hard to recognise the differences. Although a lot of alarms provide a similar service, it is worth the time to find which one is best for the individual needs of the alarm user.

This guide will focus on the important features and make the process a little less daunting.

What Features are Important for Personal Alarms?

Comfort – The alarm user should feel comfortable when wearing their pendant and for the alarm to be truly effective, it should always be worn. This means that size and weight of the pendant are important factors to consider when choosing an alarm for your loved one. Our pendant only weighs seven grams, which makes them so light, the alarm user may often forget they are wearing it.

More recently, the pendant has been developed due to an increasing number of people preferring to wear the button around the wrist. This can easily be altered using the attachments we have available, including a neck cord, a soft hypoallergenic wrist strap and a belt clip for wearing on clothing – all of these options allowing the alarm user to make the decisions themselves. The red button is completely interchangeable and this can be altered from week to week depending on personal preference.

Aesthetics – Another thing to consider is how the alarm looks. Your loved one may be worried that the alarm will be a huge red button, making them feel quite vulnerable. For this reason, our pendant has been designed to be 50% smaller than previous models, in order to be discreet. It’s roughly around the same size as the head of a teaspoon – dimensions: 36 x 27 x 14mm.

This means the pendant can easily be concealed by a jumper sleeve around the wrist or under clothing around the neck or belt. The pendant also incorporates a small LED which provides the alarm user with reassurance that the alarm has been activated.

Battery Life – It is essential that the pendant can be used whenever it is required, so it is extremely important that the battery will last. Our pendant uses a battery which has a life of up to seven years. We also know when the battery is running low due to the improved low battery monitoring service we offer, and will automatically send a brand new replacement pendant at no extra charge. This means there is no fuss about charging batteries or swapping them.

Range – Personal alarms should not make your loved one feel uneasy or have an affect on their daily life. A lot of people choose personal alarms so they can maintain their independence and stay in their own home, so we don’t want your loved one to be stuck in the same room with the alarm. Because of this, our alarms use a radio frequency and have a range of up to 100 metres which means the alarm user can keep their freedom and still get out in the garden or roam around their home. The pendant would not have any affect on day to day life.

Waterproof – The bathroom is a high-risk area for falls so it is important to ensure the alarm you choose is waterproof. Our pendants are completely water resistant and can be under one metre of water for 30 minutes, so should always be worn – including bath or shower time!

Easy to use – Last but not least, a common factor which can cause hesitation when organising an alarm is the worry that the equipment will be difficult to use. Our pendant is extremely simple, with the large red button located in the middle of the pendant. The red button simply needs to be pressed in order for the pendant to raise the call with our 24/7 Emergency Monitoring Team. If your loved one suffers with severe arthritis, we even have an Easy Press Adaptor which can make activating the alarm even easier if they are unable to apply much pressure to the button.
