In Britain we currently have an ageing population. More people than ever are needing additional support to live independently, with someone needing the support of a nursing home. So why is this so expensive, and why are those individuals waiting for months for rooms to become available?
Midlands103 Radio reported last week that there are currently 50 people waiting for an available place in a nursing home in the Midlands. This is expected to only worsen as the population of older people increases. This means that beds are being blocked in hospitals around the UK as those waiting for additional support cannot be released without adequate help in place.
Boris Johnson’s position as Prime Minister is in its early stages. However, he wasted no time in making it clear he intends to find a solution to this ongoing issue. Boris stated “My job is to protect you or your parents or grandparents from the fear of having to sell your home to pay for the costs of care.” Mr Johnson hopes that a solution can be implemented to give “older people the dignity and security they deserve.” But how does he intend to do this?
What is the current situation?
At present, it is reported around 1.4 million people who require support to live independently are either not getting enough help. This is due to deep cuts in budgets in addition to local councils tightening their eligibility criteria for help and support. Mr Johnson has announced figures for additional funding for schools and funding to create 20,000 more police officers. However these figures don’t compare to the huge amount needed to restore the level of access to social care back to what existed between 2009-10. It is speculated this would cost at least £8bn alone.
More people than ever are having to consider a more affordable alternative to moving into a care home. But this isn’t without its own challenges. Some other options may include adapting your home to simplify tasks. A personal alarm is also a very good option for many. This allows independent living with 24-hour support on hand, if it is required. However, these ‘solutions’ are not an option for all, especially those requiring a high level of care.
