Doughnut anyone? – National Doughnut Week

There’s a vast variety of national days, weeks and months celebrated throughout the year, May is a particular month when there’s lots happening. Last week we blogged about how it’s National Share-a-Story Month. This week however is National Doughnut Week.

What a great one hey? It’s also got a good reason behind it. For those of you that don’t know the ins and outs of this celebration:

National Doughnut Week is a unique opportunity for bakers, cafes and coffee shops across the UK to raise funds for The Children’s Trust and is sponsored by CSM Bakery Solutions.”

It’s an event where bakeries, cafes and companies can get involved by signing up to be a participating outlet, and once signed up they can start fundraising for The Children’s Trust – a brilliant charity!

It’s not just for those groups either, anyone can get involved and do some fundraising by holding doughnut days. Selling your doughnuts at work or school is a fab way to make some dough *badum dum tish!*

By heading over to the official Doughnut Week website you can find all the details of how to sign up for fundraising packs, and also read up on others ways to get involved.

There’s a great section which also gives the top 10 fascinating doughnut facts, our favourites are:

1. The doughnut as we know it today, supposedly came to Manhattan under the Dutch name of olykoeks, meaning oily cakes.

2. During World War II, Red Cross women otherwise known as Doughnut Dollies passed out hot doughnuts to the solders.

3. They may have been created by mistake! One story reportedly tells of a cow who kicked over a pot of oil into a mixture of pasty.
