100s of firefighters have been sent to tackle a blaze in London. Firefighters from all over the city were called to the scene at 7:40am, as it was spotted a blaze had broken out at The Mall in Walthamstow, East London.
Walthamstow Fire – What We Know
London Fire Brigade said: “15 fire engines and around 100 firefighters have been called to the fire, where part of the roof was alight by London Fire Brigade.” Since this quote was released, a further 10 fire engines have been deployed. This means that over 125 firefighters are on the scene.
The cause of the Walthamstow fire, however, is unknown. It is also unknown if any, if so, how many of the 66 stores and restaurants were caught in the flames. The Met Police said officers are dealing with this as major incident and have advised people to stay away. Whilst the numerous crews work to get the blaze under control, residents have been advised to keep doors and windows closed due to the smoke from the fire. There are also a number of local road closures in place which will affect motorists.
It is thought that as greater numbers of firefighters are sent to the area, further closures and disruptions may be made. Cathy Phillips Brady added:
“There was a lot of smoke filling our lungs as we get on the tube at Walthamstow.”
This suggest that Transport for London will be monitoring the situation closely, and that the station may be closed for safety of commuters.
Update (22/07/19 – 15:03):
We have now received news that the fire is under control. Over 15o firefighters spent over four hours tackling the blaze. The east London shopping centre has been badly damaged. London Fire Brigade (LFB) said the fire was brought under control by about 12:15. However, firefighters remain at the scene “damping down” and people have been told to continue avoiding the area.
